You may not know this, but Washington is one of the biggest cranberry producing states in the country. And this week, we welcome our newest farm to your Ballard Farmers Market: Bloom Creek Cranberry Farm. Bloom Creek hails from down Olympia way, where they grow some beautiful cranberries. Tired of canned cranberry sauce? Looking for local fresh cranberries? Look no further than your Ballard Farmers Market and Bloom Creek Cranberry Farm.
The most local of local salmon fisheries opened this past week on Puget Sound, and Loki Fish will have fresh Puget Sound keta salmon today, and for the next few weeks. They fish this fishery at night out in the middle of the Sound, west of Seattle. In the photo above, Pete Knutson of Loki Fish brings in the first keta salmon of the Puget Sound season earlier this week on the F/V Njord, one of Loki's two boats.
It's dahlia season, and throughout your Ballard Farmers Market you will find spectacular, fresh-cut dahlias ready to brighten up your home. Like these from Ia's Garden. Stunning, aren't they?
Summer Run Farm is the first to bring Brussels sprouts to your Ballard Farmers Market this year. They've got them loose, and they've got them "on the tree", above. If you've ever wondered what they look like in the field, the trees will give you an idea. And maybe it'll even be cool enough to your kids to get them to eat some. If not, I recommend cooking them with shallots, bacon and a little white wine. That'll do the trick!
Asian pears are in season, now, too. These beauties are from Martin Family Orchards. They've also got a great selection of apples and Bartlett pears now, too.
Growing Things Farm produces amazing, farm-fresh eggs from happy hems. And they've got lots of them right now. So stop by and visit them at the 22nd Avenue end of the Market today and get you some. And while you're there, grab a chicken, some soap, some jam, and some veg, too. They do it all!
It's a rainbow of carrots from Alm Hill Gardens! And their carrots are rockin' right now. They're not just colorful. They're sweet, crunchy deliciousness! Oh, they've got plenty of other good stuff now, too, from winter squash to sunflower sprouts to salad mix and more. Enjoy!
With long, cool, wet nights, now's the time of year to crank up your oven and slow cook you a nice beef roast. And Skagit River Ranch has you covered. They've got briskets and rib roasts, chucks and eye of the rounds, and every other kind of beefliciousness you desire, all from their happy, healthy herds up in Sedro-Woolley.
ACMA Mission Orchards has a dizzying selection of apples right now, as it is peak apple harvest time. And these Jonathan apples are particularly special. But they are short-timers, only around for a few weeks, so grab some while you can!
And how about some Cirrus cheese from Mt. Townsend Creamery to go with those apples? This is their camembert style of cheese, perfectly suited to pairing with apples, and maybe a nice cracker, like these...
These are Carrot Coriander Crackers from House of the Sun. They are made with lots of local ingredients from the farmers right here at your Ballard Farmers Market, and they are awesome. And if that isn't cool enough, they are raw! Yup, House of the Sun produces raw, vegan foods, which means they don't bake all the goodness out when they make these. Stop by for a sample today, then grab a package, some Cirrus, and some Jonathan apples and have a wonderful afternoon snack!
