Yep. It's peach season. Some folks may think of Georgia when they think of peaches, but we know better. Washington is the true peach capitol of the U.S. In fact, I met a Serbian man in Milwaukee several years ago, and he told me his harrowing tale of surviving a Nazi P.O.W. camp in the 1940s and climbing over the Alps into Italy to escape Yugoslavia in the 1950s to come to Wisconsin to reunite with his father and open a Serbian restaurant called Three Brothers. But when he heard I was from Washington, all he could think about was a juicy peach he had eaten here some 25 years earlier.
These peaches from Collins and Tiny's are the early varieties, meaning they are just the first wave of many this summer. Of course, the market is also full of apricots right now, and to celebrate the season, Empire Ice Cream is rolling out its Apricot Sorbet this week.
Just in time for summer barbecue and picnic season comes cabbage and potato season. These Early Jersey Wakefield cabbages from Oxbow (above) distinguish themselves with their bullet-like shape. They are a tasty, firm cabbage. And how about some new Yukon Gold potatoes from Alvarez.
Alvarez has nice, cured Mabton Sweet onions, too. Why not Walla Walla Sweets? Because a federal marketing order only allows onions grown with a very small area around Walla Walla to legally carry that moniker. So farmers have fun at the markets and name their onions grown from Walla Walla seeds after whatever town their from.
Sidhu Farms should have blueberries this week. And they will definitely have plenty of this cauliflower.
