Wow, it is only the first day of summer, and already we are into raspberry season. Look for them at Sidhu Farms and Alm Hill Gardens. And, of course, there are still plenty of strawberries and cherries throughout the Market. And now, just to mix things up, Tiny's has the first apriums of the year -- one of those newish fruits that is a cross between an apricot and a plum.
Lots of wonderful vegetables are flooding the Market now, too, like these Harricot Vert green beans from Stoney Plains. Alm Hill has fava beans, basil, cilantro and purslane. Growing Things has baby summer squash with blossoms. Prana Farm has five kinds of lettuce, kale, collard greens and peas. Local Roots has frisee, pink turnips, pink beauty and shunkyo radishes and seven kinds of lettuce. Summer Run has baby beets, broccoli and carrots. Oxbow has cauliflower. Children's Garden has mint and cilantro. And check out these sea vegetables -- sea beans -- from Forage & Found Edibles.
Don't forget to visit Oyster Bill Whitbeck at Taylor Shellfish today. He is hosting cookbook author Poppy Tooker, who will be signing books and cooking gumbo all day. If you are in the mood for gumbo, Oyster Bill can help you with some shucked oysters for it.
But maybe you are the one who is in charge of entertaining the guests while someone else makes the gumbo. Then you should pick up some cider from Rockridge Orchards or some wine from Sea Breeze, and some cheese from River Valley Ranch.
You could also pick up some fresh goat cheese from River Valley or Port Madison to stuff in some squash blossoms for frying from Alvarez or Growing Things.
And don't forget, it is Father's Day today. Wilson Fish wants you to know that they've got some smoked king salmon, just out of the smoker yesterday, as well as some beautiful fresh red and marbled king, as well as halibut, to make your dad one happy camper this afternoon and evening.
